Sunderland International Airshow 2014

Mark your calendars for the biggest international airshow in Europe happening this weekend! It’s spectacular, and more importantly, FREE. The airshow takes place near the Roker and Seaburn coastlines. Be sure to get there early to get a prime seat, as the event is extremely popular and attracts over a million spectators each year. The first show was in 1988, and was meant to be a one-time event, but due to the popularity, they have continued it since then. Lucky for us!

This year’s show launches on Friday 25th July from 6pm to 10pm, and Saturday and Sunday’s shows will run from 10am-6pm. The magnificent Sunderland coastline is the backdrop for this exciting air show.

Each year, besides special guests and aircrafts, the Red Arrows and Eurofighter Typhoon fly by. The Red Arrows are the aerobatic team of the Royal Air Forces (RAF). This year will mark the 50th year the Red Arrows have partaken in public events like the Sunderland Airshow. The Eurofighter Typhoon is a multirole fighter that can fly as fast as 2,495 km/h.

The Royal Navy traditionally have a warship stationed in the harbour for the Sunderland Airshow. It is usually the HMS Ocean, an amphibious assault ship, which is designed to assist in the landing of Royal aircrafts.

Although the event is free, there are opportunities to get a better view by purchasing tickets to the Premier Zone or the Spitfire Lounge. Each have private facilities and bars, as well as the Spitfire Lounge including a meal in the ticket price.

Seaham Hall is located just seven miles from the action of the Sunderland Airshow. You don’t have to rely on the show for stunning coastline views, you’ll have it at Seaham Hall with 37 acres of coastline overlooking the vibrant sea. Seaham Hall is all about luxurious decadence as they offer a state-of-the-art spa, Serenity Spa. Most of its suites have seaside views plus huge flatscreens and standing baths.

You will no doubt be hungry after watching the action of the air show all day. Ozone is a relaxed and delicious Asian Restaurant located right in the Serenity Spa, so it is perfect for a bite to eat after your massage. If you’re coming with family, Byrons Bar and Grill offers a great selection of bar food and munchies.

If you want to explore the area a bit more, there are many activities and sights to see around Seaham Hall. Hadrian’s Wall, which you can find out about in our previous blog, is located nearby as well as the beautiful Durham Cathedral and Castle.
