Nestled in the leafy landscape of South Gloucestershire, with views stretching to the Severn Estuary and the hills of South Gloucestershire and Wales, Thornbury Castle was built in the early 16th century. As you walk through the tapestry-lined halls past suits of armour, echoes of great moments in English history abound – the beheaded Duke of Buckingham, Henry VIII’s visits with Anne Boleyn, and Mary Tudor, who lived here before taking the throne as Queen Mary.
Today, this Tudor Castle is recognised as one of the finest historic hotels in the country, where Tudor style meets modern excellence. Indoors are magnificent open fireplaces, fine wood panelling, historic paintings, a dungeon dining room and a grand hall for balls, feasts and parties. Outdoors in the garden enjoy croquet on the lawn, try your hand at archery, or learn the basics of falconry (at an additional cost – pre-booking essential).
The castle has recently completed a multi-million pound refurbishment, which has included the beautiful restoration of its dining rooms, lounges and library, as well as its luxurious 27 bedchambers and suites. The carefully restored bedchambers have been beautifully re-designed, encompassing traditional materials and artisan design, to maximise the unique regal ambience. Bedchambers feature luxurious fixtures and fittings, along with a full upgrade to all bathrooms. Most of the bedrooms overlook the oldest Tudor garden in England; many have luxurious four-poster beds and huge Tudor fireplaces. The four intimate dining rooms have a gracious ambience to suit the superb cuisine. Private dining is also available in the atmospheric Dungeon. For a bit of extra pampering, an array of massages and beauty treatments are available in a dedicated treatment room overlooking the stunning walled gardens.
Thornbury is an ideal base from which to discover the many historic sites, villages and towns located within an hour’s drive of the castle, or cross the Severn Bridge into Wales and explore that beautiful country.
