If you are looking for the quintessential country house experience, here it is in all its glory. Dating back to 560 AD (and very possibly the site of the legendary White Palace, Wales’s first Parliament), Llangoed Hall later became a gracious country house and home to designer Laura Ashley and her husband Sir Bernard Ashley.

The house is set in 17 acres of breathtakingly beautiful landscaped gardens along the banks of the River Wye. The Ashleys envisaged Llangoed Hall as the place where they could recreate the atmosphere of an Edwardian house party, and the home-from-home ethos remains today. There is no reception desk, just friendly staff who greet each guest individually on arrival. In the summer months, the Great Hall's French windows are opened so that guests can enjoy the stunning garden, while in winter, the huge stone fireplace has a traditional log fire blazing. Fine portraits and works by Whistler and the Edwardians adorn the Picture Gallery's walls and bedrooms are individually decorated with furnishings from the late Sir Bernard's fabric company, Elanbach, situated in the hotels grounds.

The much lauded restaurant showcases the finest Welsh produce, including ingredients sourced from the kitchen garden. Head Chef Nick Brodie and his talented team places emphasise the powerful connection between sustainability, nature, food and flavour with such local produce as Black Beef and Brecknockshire Lamb. It’s no wonder that Waitrose Good Food Guide has placed Llangoed among the top 50 restaurants in the UK two years running (and the only Welsh hotel in the Top 50).

The secluded Wye Valley and the Black Mountains are all around the hotels location with the Brecon Beacons, Cardiff, Hay-on-Wye along with Caerphilly, Raglan and Powis Castles, and the world famous Tintern Abbey which are all within easy reach.
