Located in the heart of midtown Manchester, this iconic art deco building (long known as “The King of King Street”) is one of the most eye-catching in the city. Designed by the great Edwin Lutyens and formerly a Midland Bank building, it is now home to the newly opened Hotel Gotham – an extraordinary 5-star hotel which simultaneously manages to be fun, luxurious, witty and flamboyant.
The wow factor is immediately apparent in the sixth floor reception, where you are greeted with a cocktail by staff in period uniforms reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties. The décor is a mixture of quirky and timeless, with black and white photography, terrazzo floors, enormous windows and old-style bank doors. The attention to detail is staggering: gold bar bookends, “swag bag” doorstops, gold bullion toiletry stands, retro bellboys and Batman-shaped do-not-disturb signs (fitting considering the name of the hotel). You may even spot a few “characters” in vintage costume wandering around to help set the scene.
The bedrooms are equipped with comfy beds with leather bed heads, not to mention all the modern conveniences like flatscreen TVs with Freeview, espresso machines and free Wi-Fi. There are even old fashioned metal binoculars on hand for peering out at the Mancunian skyline.
Honey Restaurant specialises in classics served with a modern twist, complemented by amazing city views from the handsome arched windows. Another highlight is Brass, an opulent private members club open also to guests during your stay. Expect a roof top terrace and top flight cocktails served in a fun, civilised atmosphere.
Manchester’s best designer shopping district lies just outside the front door, as do scores of bars and restaurants, The National Football Museum, conference centre, art galleries, theatre, concert halls, night life and more.
