Owned by the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s, Swinton Park Hotel is part of the vast Swinton Estate, which at 20,000 acres, is one of the largest privately owned estates in England. The Estate is made up of forest, open moorland, reservoirs and farmland within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and bordering on the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Swinton Park is the ancestral seat of the Earls of Swinton, and the building itself has been developed over the years as a Victorian ‘castle’ with the addition of battlements, turrets and enormous reception rooms. The gracious public rooms and vast corridors are lavishly furnished with open fires, polished wood floors, antiques and ancestral portraits.
The 32 bedrooms are spacious, and beautifully appointed in a contemporary historical style. Each room is fully equipped with modem points, CD players and satellite television and Wi-Fi access and all rooms enjoy lovely views over the surrounding parkland. For that real ‘castley’ feel, choose the Turret Suite, with its steep stairs on three floors, or one of the other vast suites on both floors with fabulously draped half-tester beds.
Award-winning Samuels Restaurant is set in the opulent main dining room with exquisite views over the park. Head Chef James Cooper minimises food miles by sourcing ingredients such as game and venison from the Estate, not to mention fresh produce from the amazing four acre walled kitchen garden. Another superb option is the Terrace Restaurant & Bar, a contemporary restaurant located next to the spa. The selection of small plates and “Yorkshire tapas” is first rate, as are the cocktails and wine list.
The choice of how to occupy your time on the Estate is enormous, from classes at the top-rated Cooking School to relaxing in the sumptuous spa. Explore the 200-acre park with lakes and gardens, along with the Quarry Gill Bridge and Druid’s Temple. Electric bicycles and mountain bikes are available for cyclists, there’s a wide range of fishing, some of the finest shooting in England, falconry at the Bird of Prey Centre, plus Pony Trekking for children. Guests enjoy complimentary membership in the Country Club and Spa, complete with indoor pool, thermal suite, gym and a host of relaxing treatments.
