Galtres Lodge is an independently owned hotel, restaurant, and bar in the very centre of York. Small yet perfectly formed, the building was originally two Georgian townhouses, which have been combined to make this charming 12-bedroom hotel and 45-seater restaurant. Step out of the doors onto the busy shopping street of Low Petergate, and turn the corner to see the magnificent York Minster, situated immediately behind the hotel.
In late 2018, new owners took over the business with a view to making lots of lovely improvements to make Galtres Lodge somewhere very special indeed. The refurbished bedrooms are light and airy, with stunning features uncovered to show the history of the building; expect to find original oak beam ceilings, exposed brick walls, and traditional fireplaces
The restaurant is open every day from 7.30am to 9pm, serving delicious home-made, tasty meals. All ingredients are sourced from as locally as possible (many from Shambles market just a short walk away), and this includes the beverages which include lots of Yorkshire beers and gins.
During the daytime, Galtres Lodge is a lovely and relaxed place to enjoy breakfast, lunch, home-made cakes, daily freshly baked scones, or even our “forest” afternoon tea which has to be seen to be believed – the most exciting afternoon tea in York (if not beyond)!
In the evening, the lights go down and the music goes up, and our a la carte menu comes in to its own – favourite dishes include the “Whole Yorkshire Hog” starter and the “Rack Of Local Lamb” main course, but there is something for everyone on this menu.
We are exceptionally proud of our location, with Petergate being most visitors’ favourite part of York. Our neighbours include some unique boutiques in characterful buildings, specialist stores, and some of the best luxury brands in the UK. There are also numerous bars and eateries, none of which can compete with our own on-site restaurant, of course!
“The Shambles”, York’s oldest and most famous street is just a few steps away from the hotel: A popular place for visitors and tourists, this narrow, cobbled pathway is lined with beautiful Elizabethan buildings and was the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter!
