No cars, no crowds, no worries: the perfect Channel Islands holiday

Herm Island lies an inexpensive 20-minute ferry ride from Guernsey. Just over a mile long by half a mile wide, you can walk around Herm in less than two hours. However, you will want to linger and admire the views from the cliff paths, the wildflowers and birdlife, or stop off for a swim at one of the glorious sandy beaches. There is only one hotel on the island, so even at the height of summer crowds are unheard of.

From the moment you step ashore and baggage porters relieve you of your luggage for the short stroll to the White House, you know you are in for a very special holiday experience. The hotel's lovely gardens lead down to the sea. Many of the comfortable bedrooms have sea views as does the restaurant, where the oysters are so fresh you can see the oyster beds from your window seat! You won't find televisions, clocks or telephones; you will find first-class dining complemented by excellent wines, and enough peace and relaxation to re-charge you for a very long time.

Relax by the pool, play croquet, or curl up in front of the fire with a good book. From the White House, it's a couple of minute's walk down to the island's shops and inn, or just 15 minutes to cross the island to popular Belvoir Beach, where a secluded garden area has been set.
