The hotel’s own estate pretty much borders the Galloway Forest Park – an area covering 300 square miles. The Park, the only designated ‘Dark Sky Park’ in the UK is great for all sorts of outdoor pursuits including bird watching. Threave Castle, the former stronghold of the Black Douglases (not the friendliest sounding clan!), is particularly picturesque – situated as it is on a small island within the River Dee. The region has some attractive market towns such as Newton Stewart, the artists’ town of Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas. Castle Douglas has a busy high street complete with butchers, bakers and candlestick makers as well as some excellent delis and cafes. Kippford, Rockcliffe and Auchencairn are three delightful villages on the Solway Coast, which should be visited. There’s an easy scenic walk from Kippford to Rockcliffe along the coast. For a panoramic view of the surrounding Galloway Hills take a walk up Screel Hill. It requires a bit of effort but the views are worth it.
