For many people this part of the country is just an area they whizz through on the M5 on their way to Devon or Cornwall. On one hand this means that many people are missing out, but on the other it means that the area remains uncrowded and unspoilt. Few places are as quaint as the Victorian seaside town of Watchet on the North Somerset coast - just 35 minutes away from Taunton. Whilst out in that direction for the day it is worth visiting the medieval village of Dunster and exploring the Exmoor National Park – whether on foot or by car. A 35 minute drive in the other direction will bring you to Glastonbury – a place that is both weird and wonderful with an energy all of its very own. You can lose yourself in the legends of the Holy Grail and King Arthur, visit the 14th century Abbey, walk to the top of the Tor (the ‘Isle of Avalon’) and receive a ‘higher perception reading’ by a Welsh Shaman. Wells Cathedral and the Cheddar Gorge are also out in this direction as is Clarks Village Shopping Outlet. If you are visiting with the children then there are many fantastic attractions including Wookey Hole Caves and the West Somerset Railway.
