Set in 350 magnificent acres on the shores of Lough Corrib, Ashford Castle is the perfect example of Irish hospitality on a grand scale. Until 1939, Ashford Castle was part of an estate owned by the Guinness family and the residence of Lord Ardilaun. Now transformed into a 5-star luxury hotel, the lavish furnishings, rich panelling of the Great Hall, objets d’art and masterpiece paintings are the domain of those guests fortunate enough to stay there. The lordly bedrooms are sumptuously furnished to the highest standards and most overlook the lough or the river.
The estate provides an almost inexhaustable array of sporting pleasures: a nine-hole golf course, indoor equestrian centre, clay pigeon shooting, archery, fishing, spa (voted best hotel spa in Ireland 2016), a fully equipped gym, and some of the most magnificent walks in Ireland, as well as the country's first school of falconry.
Everything about Ashford Castle reflects its aristocratic antecedents: the comfort, the service and, not least, the food. This area of Ireland is famous for the quality of its produce, especially the seafood, which comes from some of the cleanest waters in Europe. You have a choice between several restaurants: 2 AA Rosette-winning traditional and French cuisine from Chef Philippe Farineau under the Waterford chandeliers of the George V Restaurant, bistro-style dining in the historic Dungeon, casual dining in Cullen’s at the Cottage and contemporary Irish fine dining at Wilde’s at the Lodge (a sister property a 20 minute stroll away, or the hotel can arrange transport). Also, afternoon tea in the exquisite Connaught Room is a pleasure not to be missed.
