This Victorian estate house snuggled into the South Londonderry village of Upperlands is the best of old and new, a captivating historical stay with modern amenities and timeless service. Originally the family home of linen magnate Harry Jackson Clark, the house still bears his influence in the form of some of the treasures he brought back from his travels to the New World. The service, too, belongs to a bygone era - Ardtara's warm, friendly staff are always happy to make your stay more comfortable, whether it's arranging a tee time or making suggestions for a day's drive.
However, you might just choose to stay in - the hotel's nine bedrooms are all quite tempting, offering roaring fires and views over the hotel's eight acres of grounds. It's just as grand, too, in Ardtara's comfortable lounges and dining room. Locally sourced produce such as Irish Sea Bass, garden vegetables, home baked breads and a range of Irish cheeses are all reflected in the menu. For those in the mood for a light bite, an appetising Bistro Menu is served daily (except Saturdays) from 5pm to 6.30pm.
Working up an appetite is certainly no problem with some of the world's best golfing at nearby Royal Portrush, angling on the River Bann, and if you're just up for a walk, there's much to be enjoyed in the nearby Sperrin Mountains and along the splendid, rugged Londonderry coast."
