A must see, must stay, period Irish manor house in Co Donegal
Coxtown Manor is not a hotel. It is a centuries old manor house in south Donegal, situated on 16 acres amidst the rolling hills nearby the Atlantic ocean. Its Belgian owner, Eduard Dewael, opened the house to the public seven years ago with a relaxed approach to hospitality that makes guests feel very much at home. Open turf fires throughout the house, even in some bedrooms, high ceilings in the elegant drawing and dining rooms, and a cosy wood panelled bar have charmed many. The bedrooms are spacious and have all recently been upgraded with state-of-the-art bathrooms. The a la carte restaurant, where the Belgian influence is never far away, is blessed with a rich choice of seafood caught locally in Donegal bay. The menu features local Charolais beef, organic produce and eggs from the large flock of hens which are free to roam outside in Coxtown's stone walled garden. While many visitors have been returning for the quality of the restaurant and the informal atmosphere of the house, south Donegal has plenty to offer visitors. Three championship links golf courses (Murvagh Golf is a 10 minutes drive) keep the golfing crowd happy, while spectacular walking in the Blue Stack Mountains, strolls along sandy beaches and Europe's highest cliffs, as well as the Glenveigh national park, look after everyone else. Donegal Town is 6 miles away, while Dublin is only a three hour drive. |
