Tigh an Eilean (House of the Island) stands in a 200-year-old seafront fishing village set in the Torridon Mountains, facing the Scottish National Trust's Isle of Pines and with glorious views over Loch Shieldaig to Loch Torridon and the open sea beyond. Hoteliers Cathryn and Christopher greet you with a warm welcome into the two lounges and cosy residents' honesty bar/library. Many of the bedrooms offer a sea view; in all, furnishings, prints and paintings lend character and charm. The food at Tigh an Eilean is really superb - on a recent visit we had roasted fig and Scottish blue cheese starter, followed by a succulent duck with fresh mango. As you might expect, the menu also features wonderful seafood delivered direct from boat to the kitchen door that day. The dining room features beautiful views out over the Loch. A casual alternative is The Coastal Kitchen, located adjacent to the hotel and under the same ownership. Specialising in local seafood, in particular shellfish, there is also a wood burning oven for delicious pizzas, and the views are just as stunning. ' This is the great outdoors, where the aromatherapy of heather, Caledonian pines and the sea is free; here, the hill walker, angler and golfer will find paradise, and sightseers by car can take in the spectacular scenery - try the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve or the 2,000-foot Bealach na Ba pass to Applecross, with its views across to Skye. Astronomers will find a soulmate in Christopher, whose telescope is set up in the garden. The lure of Tigh an Eilean is ever-present; one visit is never enough.
