The Royal Harbour Hotel(Ramsgate, Kent, UK) |

As one of the original British seaside resorts Ramsgate has been attracting holiday makers since the late 1700s. Due to its proximity to Europe it was also a key embarkation point during the Napoleonic wars and the evacuation of Dunkirk. You might not think it's an obvious first choice for a short break - yet with its fascinating waterfront, famous white cliffs, endless sandy beaches, maritime heritage and general all-round nostalgia - you should think again. The hotel, owned by the charismatic James Thomas, occupies adjoining listed Georgian townhouses overlooking the Royal Harbour (the only one in Britain) and the English Channel. It was recently praised for being 'un-hip' in an Observer review - which delights James. He has created a deliciously comfortable and cosy place against a period backdrop. There are snug corners, open fires, quirky memorabilia and antiques, colourful artworks and captivating views. Its eclectic style is unmistakably English. Most bedrooms have sea views, some have balconies and the Cabin doubles are romantically cosy. In the basement there is a screening room where guests can watch movies. Breakfast is served until a leisurely 11.30 am - no other meals are available, but there are many excellent local eateries. Dickens, Turner and Shackleton all frequented Ramsgate - so you couldn't be in better company.
