This civilised and cosy multi award-winning coaching inn is set on the green in a picture postcard pretty village facing the old water pump and the medieval stocks (thankfully no longer in use). Next door is a Saxon church known locally as the 'Cathedral of the Dales.' As you step inside the Inn you will savour polished panelling, old beams, crackling fires, gleaming brasses and fresh flowers. You can relax in the lounge with a cup of tea, or a brandy while reading the newspapers to the accompaniment of the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock. Alternatively, there is a buzz in the bar with its oak settle, old prints and carriage lamps - real ales pulled with a proper head. The two rosette restaurant offers delicious locally sourced produce with a fine selection of wines tasted and chosen by the owners Alison and Christopher Davy. The bedrooms are individually designed, some with oak beams and antiques, others more contemporary, all offering a delightful and comfortable stay. The Inn is an ideal base to explore still largely undiscovered Teesdale. You can leave your car and explore from the Inn on foot. Footpaths leave in every direction from the village. Nearby there are old market towns and castles, the world famous Bowes Museum, spectacular Raby Castle, and the charming Eggleston Hall with its walled gardens. Further afield there is Durham Cathedral and the Beamish Open Air Museum.
