Quayside seafood restaurants tempt you from rooms with harbour views

The Harbourside Restaurant and its more casual little sister, The Ha-Penny Pier, sit right on Old Harwich Quay. Over the years, this remarkable pair have established an enviable reputation for the quality and variety of their... More About Pier at Harwich seafood menus - which will come as no surprise to foodies when they realise that the owners are the Milsom family of Le Talbooth fame (a watchword for fine dining in East Anglia). Refreshed and revamped in 2005 with a completely new look and a refreshing modern feel, these twin seaside retreats offer fabulous views (including a few by acclaimed Brightlingsea painter Jamie Dodds) and fantastic dining overseen by head chef Chris Oakley.

Located adjacent to the restaurants, one of The Pier's chief charms is its harbour views, which are constantly enlivened by the coming and going of yachtsmen and traditional fishing boats. The 14 bedrooms breathe a distinctly nautical chic of their own; the imaginative use of seashells and rope, weather boarding and natural fibre floor coverings augmented by marine paintings and photographs lends a wonderfully briny air, and there are numerous creative touches to amuse and entertain throughout the hotel.

The Pier makes a welcome overnight stop en route to the Continent, or take advantage of the hotel's great-value sailing weekends. There are also short break offers in conjunction with Colchester hotel Maison Talbooth.
