More About Pear Tree at Purton
four-star sightseeing attractions like Oxford and Bath. For those of a more mystical persuasion, the ancient Avebury Stone Circle and even Stonehenge are within striking distance, as are the white horses carved into the chalk hills of the Vale of the White Horse and Vale of Pewsey.
The Pear Tree occupies a handsome 16th-century former vicarage moved brick by brick in 1912 from its original position next to the unusual twin-towered church of St. Mary's 400 yards away. Each of the pretty and extremely comfortable rooms are named after famous local characters, from Anne Hyde, mother of Queen Mary and Queen Anne, to cricketer E H Budd. The conservatory restaurant is a key feature, with lovely views of the traditional English gardens scented with roses and fragrant stocks in summer. The hotel has a charmingly relaxed family-run air lent by hosts Francis and Anne Young, and the service is memorable for its genuine consideration and care toward guests.
