The Old Rectory Hotel(Martinhoe, Devon, UK) |

This characterful Georgian rectory with its picture perfect English garden is the quintessential country house found within the pages of an EM Forster novel. It's a magical spot surrounded by National Trust parkland close to the dramatic Exmoor cliffs and coastal path. Since buying the Old Rectory in early 2008, new owners Huw and Sam have refurbished it throughout in luxurious classic country house in style with some contemporary touches. Period furnishings are offset against plush fabrics and wall-hangings from designers such as Jane Churchill. Once referred to as 'the quietest hotel in England' (no under 14s allowed) this is the kind of place where you can find a quiet corner in the drawing room and hunker down with a book - or else lose yourself in three acres of tranquil gardens abundant with wildlife. Chef Huw is very serious about the food and has already received many plaudits. Ingredients for the daily changing menus are sourced locally. Everything on the breakfast plate, bar the tomatoes, originates less than four miles away and grapes, from the attractive Vinery, grace the cheeseboard. Unusually the average length of stay here is around a week which must bear testimony to the place's restorative powers.
