Country House elegance in the heart of the city

Given its history of conquerors (Roman, Saxon, Viking and Norman), it is not surprising that York boasts of being one of Britain's most interesting cities - and you would be hard pressed to find anywhere more convenient or comfortable for its exploration than The Grange. Within walking distance are the Minster (dating from 1100) and its remarkable stained glass, the City Walls, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum and the medieval Shambles. The Grange Hotel itself is a listed Regency townhouse built in 1834 and carefully restored to create a luxurious 36 bedroom hotel. Six new bedrooms, added in 2008, feature flat screen televisions at the foot of the double ended baths and each of these new rooms benefits from air conditioning. English chintz and fine antiques pervade, and all rooms offer satellite television.
