A Georgian residence surrounded by medieval history in a peerless Dorset setting

Sherborne is the ancient capital of Dorset and is known for its medieval architecture and famous Abbey. It is also a town that can boast not one but two castles: The Old Castle was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh in 1592 by Elizabeth I, but after an unsatisfactory attempt to modernise, he went and built his own more 'up-to-date' version instead! In the middle of all this history is The Eastbury, which was once a private Georgian residence. In keeping with the period, the house is spacious and bright. Bedrooms are scrupulously clean, very comfortable and thoughtfully furnished, and some overlook the very English walled garden. The restaurant is housed within a lovely conservatory, and in summer guests can also dine outside in the al fresco bistro. The style of cooking is decidedly English, and the region provides an abundance of high-quality produce. It's always a good sign when a restaurant is popular with the locals - and The Eastbury certainly seems to be that. In Sherborne itself there is much to see, making The Eastbury even more tempting - but there is also an inexhaustible list of places to visit in the surrounding area, which should not be overlooked.
