The Castle Hotel, Bishop's Castle is pure heaven for those that hanker after an authentic, unpretentious and characterful hostelry. Situated in a picturesque market town on the Welsh Marches in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this former coaching inn dates back to 1719 and has a wonderfully colourful history. Hosts Henry and Rebecca are particularly welcoming and evidently love what they do. The bedrooms are impeccably clean and very comfortable, and are furnished in a rustic country style and many have fine views over the town to the surrounding countryside. The Castle has three bars - each has its own individual character, some with open fires, and one with a terrace out into the garden. You will find an impressive selection of wonderfully named local real ales - two of which are brewed in Bishops Castle itself, which plays host to an annual Beer Festival. This is a place where you'll still find locals playing shove ha'penny and Bar Billiards. Guests can eat in any one of the bars or else in the a fine oak panelled Oak Room Restaurant. Castle Hotel serves excellent modern pub food and sources many of the ingredients from local Shropshire producers. Bishops Castle is midway between Shrewsbury and Ludlow, so it is well placed to explore this delightful part of Shropshire and the neighbouring Welsh borders. Clun, Ludlow, Shrewsbury and Welshpool are all within easy reach, and the South Shropshire Hills, including The Longmynd, the Stipperstones and Offa's Dyke all offer excellent walking and cycling.
