Zoom image by clickingThis characterful 16th century coaching inn has been given a new lease of life as a 4-star restaurant with rooms, specialising in Anglo-French gourmet cuisine awarded with two AA rosettes It stands on the High Street in Burford (near Oxford), which is regarded by many as the most picture perfect of all the Cotswold villages. Once a busy staging post, it remains full of life with many interesting boutiques, antique shops and cafes. The Bull has now been fully restored by Jean-Marie and Clare Lauzier. Jean-Marie has had a distinguished career working at restaurants in France and the UK, including as Albert Roux's head waiter at Gavroche, which offers an inkling of what to expect. During the process its wonderful heritage has been preserved whilst being firmly brought into the 21st century. The bedrooms, with exposed beams and slanting floors, are impeccably appointed. Some have antique four-posters and the the Trafalgar Suite, named in commemoration of a visit by Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton in 1802, has an antique King-sized bed. The French menu, created by Head Chef Paul Scott, is simply exquisite and includes such dishes as Lobster tail with a scallop mousse and locally reared Kelmscott pork with a cider and calvados sauce. All the desserts, especially the hot souffles and fresh sorbets are a must.
