This delectable cliffside retreat offers a taste of the good life

Lord Bute, Prime Minister to George III from 1762-1763, escaped from his mercifully short reign in London to the breathtaking high cliffs of Christchurch Bay, where he was so taken by the area that he commissioned architect... More About Lord Bute Robert Adam to build him a house - 'High Cliff', which was completed in 1770. The original building failed to weather the cliffside conditions, but its descendent Highcliffe Castle remains and today, the original gatehouses to Highcliffe Castle are the entrance lodges to a remarkable purpose-built hotel and restaurant. Inside, you'll find 13 rooms and the remarkable Lord Bute Suite. And when you're ready for a bite to eat, there's a bounty to pick from, including what the proprietors call a 'traditional Sunday luncheon' - but an ordinary lunch this is not! On the menu is a selection from the chef's repertoire of soups, a rosemary and garlic roasted leg of lamb with redcurrant sauce and a stunning selection of homemade desserts, to name a few. Alternately, the Coach House Suite can be self-catering, if you so desire. And when you've had your fill and are ready for a jaunt outdoors, the Lord Bute's convenient location near the beach and Bournemouth offers world-class shopping, entertainment and a taste of the beach life. Golfing, sailing and short trips to the Isle of Wight can also be arranged.
