Just off J13 of the M4 and without a crabstick in sight is an outwardly demure and inwardly explosive little thatched cottage known as the Crab at Chieveley. AA seafood restaurant of the year and winner of the prestigious Remy... More About Crab at Chieveley 2004/2005 award, this restaurant with rooms offers outstanding seafood. You might well ask what a barnacled beast such as this is doing miles from the coast in Berkshire, but then that is part of the place's charm. There aren't many restaurants of this calibre that eschew the tenets of television interior design and bedeck the place with such a smorgasbord of interesting little antiquities. The eclectic style found throughout has been scoured from home and abroad. The swarthy enthusiasm of the restaurant is matched by an eponymous set of rooms. Hand crafted objet d'art, trunks, lights and more are carefully placed in a succession of rooms that play homage to some of the finest hotels in the world. You may recognise Treetops of royal honeymoon fame, the colonial grandeur of Raffles, or the Moroccan slant of La Mamounia. All the ground floor rooms have a private garden and hot tub. The hotel's private marquee comfortably housing 100, comes complete with its own chef, a barbeque for those balmy summer nights [the marquee is fully heated] and a talking point in its own right - a traditional Citroen van bar!
