Its splendid six acre gardens include Europe's tallest tulip tree, and the park is virtually unchanged since it was originally landscaped. Refurbished to the highest standards, Taplow is a fine example of Georgian classicism, with Doric columns, high decorative ceilings, chandeliers and chiselled brass balusters - and the period design is subtly combined with contemporary amenities and creature comforts. All 32 luxury bedrooms could happily feature in a mega-budget period drama, and each room is individually designed and beautifully restored to the style of the period. To be seated in the high-ceilinged dining room of Berry's Restaurant, enjoying award-winning cuisine, gives the traditional country house feel without being formal. The service is superb - friendly and professional and always helpful without being obtrusive. As you stroll like a lord through your very own estate, it is hard to believe you are so close to the capital - within an hour of London's West End, 10 minutes from Windsor, and only 15 minutes (though out of earshot) from Heathrow.
