Before the sea receded, the only access to the citadel was through the medieval Landgate, which still stands not a stone's throw from Rye Lodge. The hotel occupies a wonderful position on East Cliff, with panoramic views down to the harbour, where the Rye fishing fleet gathers. A few steps away are the bustling high street, Rye Castle and picturesque cobbled streets of quaint Tudor and Elizabethan buildings festooned with flower-filled window boxes and hanging baskets.
