Relax and enjoy a Regency gem in the heart of Wordsworth country

William Wordsworth described the Lake District as 'the loveliest spot that man has ever known'. He shared his passion for its inspirational landscape of rugged mountains, reflective lakes, doughty stone villages and valleys with... More About Rothay Manor fellow poets and artists - as well as generations of visitors who come here to hike, sail, fish or just admire their surroundings from a lake cruise.

A quarter of a mile from the head of Lake Windermere and within a short walk of Ambleside, Rothay Manor is a wonderful base for exploring the region. The elegant Regency house is set in its own landscaped gardens and has been owned by the Nixon family for over 40 years. Brothers Nigel and Stephen are currently at the helm. There is a real sense of family pride in the hotel's warm and welcoming style, the thoughtfully-decorated bedrooms and the imaginative and beautifully presented food in the restaurant. Guests can pick up a free fishing permit or use the pool, sauna and steam room at a nearby leisure club without charge. The Nixons also offer a programme of special interest breaks between October and May, ranging from painting and antiques to walking, gardening, bridge and scrabble.
