Think cream teas and croquet, comfy sofas and homemade jam, log fires in winter and the lazy buzz of bumblebees in summer and you will have conjured up an image of an almost forgotten Britain that we are happy to report is alive and well at Mill End. The term 'country house hotel' does not do justice to this delectable time capsule housed in an 18 th century former flour mill on the River Teign. The experience is far more cosy and personal, rather like staying with a favourite branch of the family. Mill End has been a hotel since 1929 and has preserved all manner of nooks and crannies where guests can hole up with a good book and relax. Upstairs bedrooms have lovely views, while downstairs rooms enjoy private stone-flagged patios. The award-winning fine cuisine in the restaurant is augmented by an impressive cheese board laden with local specialities, and regular guests rave about the dangerously tempting desserts. There are plenty of ways to work off the calories - hiking in Dartmoor National Park, local walks, pony trekking and golf are easily arranged, and Mill End also offers private salmon and trout fishing. Local attractions include the pretty village of Chagford and Castle Drogo, a Sir Edwin Lutyens-designed National Trust property. The north and south Devon coasts are also within striking distance, and canine walking companions are made very welcome.
