Middlethorpe Hall and Spa(York, Yorkshire, UK) |

'Tis a very pritty place', wrote the diarist Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who made her home here in the early 18th century - and she would probably feel quite at home revisiting Middlethorpe today. The beautifully restored Hall dates from 1699, and antique furnishings and paintings have been carefully selected to blend with their period surroundings. The public rooms are decorated in mellow tones, with fresh garden flowers lending a charmingly informal note. In particular, the pale yellow drawing room has a marvellously relaxing and timeless feel, as do the comfortable guest rooms, which are divided between the main house and an adjoining courtyard. Middlethorpe is set in 20 acres of parkland and gardens, where guests can stroll in the glorious rose garden and admire the magnificent cedar of Lebanon standing sentinel behind the house. They can also enjoy a gentle game of croquet or a session in the well-equipped health and fitness spa, with its large indoor pool, sauna and steam rooms, gym and beauty salons. In addition to its prime location for racing enthusiasts, Middlethorpe is ideally placed for visiting the historic city of York. Further afield are ancient abbeys, Castle Howard and the Yorkshire Dales. In 2008 Middlethorpe Hall became the property of The National Trust by donation.
