The Coopers have lived here for 350 years - the welcome is as warm as ever

Home of the Cooper family for more than 350 years, Markree Castle is now run as a small family hotel by Charles and Mary Cooper, the 10th generation of the family to live at Markree.

Set in a large estate with lovely gardens, the... More About Markree Castle original house has been altered many times over the years, with the primary addition added in 1802 by the architect Francis Johnston. The enormous oak staircase is overlooked by a stained-glass window depicting 20 generations of the Cooper family tree, and the Louis Philippe-style plasterwork in the dining room makes it one of Ireland's most spectacular rooms.

Charles Cooper worked in hotels in many other countries before returning to Markree in 1989. Since then, much has been restored, creating a family hotel of distinctive character. The bedrooms all have private bathrooms, telephones and efficient heating, yet great care has been taken to retain the character of the old building and the family atmosphere rather than the formal, impersonal atmosphere of more luxurious hotels. The restaurant has also become well known for carefully-prepared meals of a high standard. Day activities, such as horse riding and golfing can be arranged.
