A former hunting lodge, the house was bought in 1888 by the fabulously wealthy fifth Earl of Lonsdale - founder of the Automobile Association, and instigator of the Lonsdale Belt award to champion boxers. The 'Yellow Earl' (apparently he loved the colour, which explains the AA's branding) obviously had an eye for a nice piece of real estate. The view from the Miss Potter Suite at Holbeck Ghyll has been voted one of the top 15 in the world. And as Lonsdale was a fan of Rennie Mackintosh, the hotel abounds in beautiful wood panelling and stained glass windows. Holbeck Ghyll offers a range of accommodation, all designed with luxury and comfort in mind. If you want something more expansive than one of the stunning, individually designed bedrooms, you can opt for your own suite, or even your own cottage. The hotel also houses a spa centre, offering visitors and guests a wealth of luxury treatments, from anti-aging facials to leg massage for fell walkers.
