Why indeed, though the subject of Byron's musings, Louis XVIII of France, had more reason than most; he was returning home to claim the throne of France after a five-year sojourn at Hartwell. Set in 90 acres of gardens and parkland this Grade I listed building has both Jacobean and Georgian facades. This is a stately home hotel in the classical mould, with large, historic public rooms filled with fine antiques and oil paintings and an ornate rococo-style morning room boasting a superb carved plaster ceiling. There are 46 individually designed bedrooms and suites, 16 of them in the restored 18th century stables, Hartwell Court. In addition, The Old Rectory, with its two acres of gardens and swimming pool, provides superb accommodation and offers great comfort and privacy. Further bliss is found in the recently refurbished Hartwell Spa - adjacent to the hotel - includes an indoor heated pool, whirlpool spa bath, steam room, saunas, gymnasium and four beauty salons. Guests are free to explore the grounds and seek out the various 18th-century pavilions and monuments. Hartwell is situated in the Vale of Aylesbury, only 45 minutes from London Heathrow. What's more, Blenheim Palace, Waddesdon Manor and Woburn Abbey are all nearby attractions. In September 2008 Hartwell House became the property of the National Trust by donation.
