Gregans Castle is a welcome surprise in a magnificent part of the west of Ireland. Nestling at the foot of Corkscrew Hill with majestic views of the Burren's bare limestone mountains and Galway Bay, this country house offers warmth, welcome and every possible comfort. It has served as a haven for botanists, bird watchers and Hollywood film stars alike. Gregans Castle was built as a private house more than 250 years ago for the Martyn family to replace their home in the old castle nearby. Today, it is one of the most comfortable hostelries on the west coast of Ireland, and is owned and managed by Simon Haden and Frederieke McMurray. The rooms are splendidly relaxing, and dinner is an essential - and award-winning! - part of the day, with a special emphasis placed on local produce. An Art & Craft Gallery now sells the best of local artists within Gregans Castle. Only 40 minutes scenic drive from Shannon airport and 45 minutes from Galway city, Gregans' magnificent locale is called The Burren and is known worldwide for wildflowers, birdwatching and distinctive scenery. A rich legacy of ancient monuments tells the story of inhabitants as far back as 5,000 years. The seascapes are dramatic and attract surfers from afar: the Atlantic Ocean, Galway Bay, the famous Cliffs of Moher, two golden beaches and several small local fishing harbours of character.
