Art and architecture meet at this regal historic home
The 29th Knight of Glin and Madam FitzGerald welcome guests to their award-winning castle in supreme style. The present Glin Castle succeeds the medieval ruin in the village of Glin, and was built in the late 18th century with...More About Glin Castle entertaining in mind. The building is steeped in Ireland's history and its architectural pleasures: The entrance hall has a screen of Corinthian pillars, a superb neoclassical plaster ceiling and a unique collection of Irish mahogany furniture. Family portraits and Irish pictures line the walls. The details are incredible - the library bookcase has a secret door, and the hall a rare flying staircase. The drawing room is a superb setting for coffee and conversation. It has an Adam period ceiling, a beautiful Bossi chimneypiece and six long windows looking out to the croquet lawn. Upstairs are sets of bedrooms, bathrooms and dressing rooms with wall-to-wall carpets, chaises longues and comfortable chintz-covered beds. The cooking is good Irish country-house style, using vegetables from the walled garden and fresh local fish, poultry and meats. The castle garden grows its own flowers and fruit, and raises bees for honey and hens for free-range eggs. The staff take great care to welcome visitors and make sure they enjoy their visit to this unique historic home.
