Dornoch Castle(Dornoch, Sutherland, UK) |

Formerly the Palace of the Bishops of Caithness, Dornoch Castle stands opposite the inspiring Dornoch Cathedral, and probably dates from about 1500. Having previously served as a palace, garrison, courthouse, jail, school and private residence for the Earls of Sutherland, Dornoch Castle is family owned and has been carefully refurbished to maintain the character of the Castle as an historic and comfortable residence. Each bedroom has its own very special ambience and there are several four posters. History surrounds you, from the panelled cocktail bar to the elegant lounge, to the restaurant set in what was once the kitchen of the Bishop's Palace. Today the restaurant is undoubtedly one of the premier dining venues in the north of Scotland, creating culinary delights using local produce and complemented by a fine selection of wines and malt whiskies. Sutherland has high mountain peaks, rugged cliffs, spectacular seascapes, over 2,000 lochs and lochans, fresh air and wide open spaces. Stone circles and other prehistoric remains abound in the area. Dornoch itself is a beautiful historic town, and the famous Royal Dornoch Championship Golf Club is located only a stone's throw from the castle.
