As soon as you walk over the threshold you are met with the combined effect of worn flagstones, wood smoke, antique furnishings, fine paintings and traditional decor - chosen by the Dowager Duchess with pieces selected from the House itself. There are some fun personal touches too. The overall feel is one of understated elegance and great warmth and, in keeping with its pedigree, the service is impeccable and discreet. The bedrooms are the epitome of authentic English luxury and all have dreamy views over the estate. The spacious superior rooms, refurbished in February 2009, are outstanding. They feature four-poster, brass or king-sized beds, lovely fireplaces and luxurious bathrooms. The Gallery Restaurant is sumptuous and refined yet not at all stiff and starchy. The food is imaginative and beautifully presented and is, as you might expect, locally sourced. The Garden Room is wonderful for a light lunch or afternoon tea on a sunny day. A perfect base from which to explore Derbyshire, The Cavendish is one of our great treasures and doubly so as it's located in one of the country's most unique and enchanting landscapes.
