Augill was built in 1837 by a gentleman of considerable wealth as a place to host weekend house parties. Today, owners Wendy and Simon Bennett run the place in a relaxed fashion and it's clear that they want their own house guests to feel at home. A grand and impressive Victorian Romantic fantasy on the outisde, inside it is homely, beautifully decorated, welcoming and comfortable. The bedrooms are authentically country house in style - each one with its own marvellous quirks and character. There are Victorian wallpapers, antique furnishings and eccentric touches such as wardrobes in the turrets and four-poster baths. Guests will also find Egyptian cotton sheets, huge beds, eco-friendly bath robes and the latest TVs. Excellent informal suppers served around the impressive oak dining table are sociable affairs, with everyone eating together at the same time from the same daily set menu. Fresh, seasonal and largely organic ingredients are sourced from top suppliers in Cumbria and Yorkshire. There's an honesty bar in the Library and in the summer dinner might even be a bar-b-que on the lawn. In keeping with the emphasis on great food, Augill Castle is also home to a cookery school, for both adults and children.

The castle sleeps up to 28 guests, and parties are fully catered for. There are four differently themed packages to choose from and you can try quad-biking, go-kart racing, archery, clay pigeon shooting, falconry, game shoots, off-road driving, climbing, kayaking, sailing at the Rookin House or Holmescales Activity centres nearby. The castle’s 1967 MGB Roadster with prepared picnic hamper can be hired by the day. Or a vintage bus exploration of the Eden Valley, Lakes & Dales can be arranged. Casino nights, a themed murder mystery evening or a wild west bucking bronco can be arranged for the party later on. The castle has an all-weather tennis court, an outdoor children's play park. There are also indoor and outdoor swimming pools, natural river swimming holes, golf, endless uncrowded walking and horse trail riding opportunities nearby. Offer: Augill Castle can be exclusively yours for your wedding, it is licensed to hold civil marriages. There are three rooms to choose from for the ceremony. The Music Room, with grand piano and large south-facing windows, the Great Hall with tudor oak paneling and wonderful fire, or the Drawing Room with a lovely view of the lawns. There are 15 acres of gardens, in which you can enjoy drinks, canapes and even dinner if the weather is fine. Weddings are bespoke, with menus of your choice - and the price covers everything. Weddings with up to 40 guests can eat in the gorgeous blue and gold dining room at two large oak tables. Groups of up to twenty can sit around one very large dining table. There is space for 28 guests to stay over. The staff can help with most things wedding-related, from flowers to musicians and additional accommodation. A full planning service is included in the price. Rates & Conditions: The bar tab is not included in the price but the hotel can discuss this with you and arrange for it to be included at a supplement.
