Home to the world's largest steam engine
Wigan Pier was opened by the Queen in 1986 and has since won 11 major tourist and education awards, for its recreation of life in the Victorian Lancashire. Visitors can step back in time and experience life in a Victorian classroom and see how cotton was made in the Cotton Machinery Hall. The pier is also home to the world's largest steam engine and offers hourly demonstrations in the Engine House. Amsterdam-style waterbuses offer canal cruisers around the pier. Frequent special events include steam fairs, brass bands, craft and antique fairs, jazz concerts and "Murder at the Pier". "Photograph courtesy of Metropolitan Wigan Leisure Services Department".
