TheTower of London
Historic Houses & Building, Historic Sites & Monuments

One of the greatest attractions in England
William the Conqueror began building the Tower of London in 1078 as a royal residence and to control the volatile City of London. Over the ensuing 900 years the Tower has served as a royal fortress, mint, armoury and more infamously as a prison and place of execution. The Tower of London has been home to the Crown Jewels for the last 600 years and today visitors can see them in all their glory in the magnificent new Jewel House. They are still used by HM The Queen for ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament and the new `Crowns and Diamonds' exhibition details the jewels' history, alongside a pile of 2,314 diamonds lent by De Beers. 1998 saw the completion of the restoration of the White Tower, the original Tower of London, and now features new displays by the Royal Armouries including the Block and Axe and Tudor arms and armour. Once inside, the Yeoman Warder `Beefeaters' give free guided tours providing an unrivalled insight into the darker secrets of over 900 years of royal history. Above the notorious Traitors' Gate, costumed guides evoke life at the court of King Edward I in the recently restored rooms of his Medieval Palace. Visitors can stand on Tower Green where two of the wives of Henry VIII lost their heads, enter the Bloody Tower where Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned, and then stroll along the Wall Walk with its splendid view of the River Thames. Explore the twelve towers, see the seven legendary ravens and visit two Chapels Royal to discover why the Tower is London!
