Stonyhurst Hall was built in 1592 by Sir Richard Shireburn and was occupied as the family seat until 1794 when an ancestor gave the Hall and Estate to the Society of Jesus as a new home for their College. Stonyhurst College is now home to 400 boys and girls and its setting in the beautiful Ribble Valley, its history, Jesuit character and facilities make it was of the premier independent boarding and day schools in the country and one of Lancashire's most interesting houses to visit
