A stunning historic cathedral
St Magnus Cathedral was built around 1137, under the supervision of Earl Rognvald Kolson in memory of his uncle St Magnus. This impressive building stands in the heart of Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney. The bones of St Magnus lie in the Cathedral's north choir pillar. Considerable restoration work was carried out last century and maintenance still continues today, with the aim to preserve the building for the future. Services are held every Sunday in the Cathedral. "Photograph courtesy of the Orkney Tourist Board, copyright: Charles Tait".
