Scone Palace

Historic Houses & Building
One of Scotland's most historic sites

SCONE PALACE, on the outskirts of Perth, sits on one of Scotland's most historic sites. The crowning place of Scottish kings including Macbeth and Robert the Bruce, and until its infamous removal by Edward I, home of the Stone of Destiny on the Moothill. The Palace was built on the ruins of the old Abbey and Bishop's Palace which were destroyed in the Reformation. After a brief spell under the Gowrie family, in 1600 Scone passed to the Murray family who continue to maintain it. Extensively rebuilt by the 3rd Earl around 1804, Scone now houses unique collections of Vernis Martin, French furniture, clocks, 16th century needlework (including pieces by Mary Queen of Scots), ivories, objets d'art and one of the country's finest porcelain collections. Gardens The grounds of the Palace house magnificent collections of shrubs, with woodland walks through the pinetum containing David Douglas' original fir and are home to the new Murray Star Maze. There are Highland cattle and peacocks to admire and an adventure play area for children. Like the Palace, the grounds and wooded parklands that stretch down to the River Tay are available for a variety of events, including corporate and private entertaining.
