Historic Houses & Building
Designed specially for the Society by Robert Adam in the early 1770

The House of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce) was designed specially for the Society by Robert Adam in the early 1770s. Today the RSA's terrace of five 18th century houses is the finest and historically most interesting remaining section of the Adam brothers' development known as the Adelphi. A complex œ4,500,000 building and refurbishment programme has brought the RSA's magnificent vaults into full use for receptions and private dining. The Great Room. The jewel in the RSA's crown is the Great Room, one of the most spectacular and delightful lecture halls in the country. The recent refurbishment of this room, including the installation of air conditioning and a new roof light, has enhanced this spectacular setting for the series of allegorical paintings, The Progress of Human Knowledge by James Barry. A perfect atmosphere for meetings, press conferences, recitals and wedding ceremonies. The unique ambience of this room is suitable for groups from 50 to 200. Benjamin Franklin Room: The classic Benjamin Franklin Room is a spacious assembly room with its chandelier and Adam fireplaces yet with a controlled ventilation system, ideal for meetings, receptions and banquets for 30-150 persons. The Vaults: Beneath the Society's house lies the largest remaining part of the Adelphi arches. Originally built for storage and more recently used as wine cellars, the vaults have now been restored and converted to provide a unique venue for all forms of event. They feature the original 18th century brickwork, and can be dressed to enhance product launches, parties, themed events and private exhibitions. OPENING TIMES SUMMER: 8am - 8pm Closed during the last 2 weeks of August. WINTER: 8am - 8pm Closed 24 Dec - 2 Ja
