A true royal palace
At the centre of a group of splendid historical buildings lies The Queen's House, a royal palace designed by Inigo Jones. The house has been sumptuously restored to show the vibrant colours of the decoration when occupied by the dowager queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I. Built in the classical style of Palladio, the house in 1635 marked a major change for English architecture, and demonstrated new rules of proportion. The Great Hall is a 40' cube, and its ceiling is a reproduction of the original by the Gentileschis. The vaults now house a Treasury of trophies, swords and plate marking great occasions in history. The elegant Tulip Staircase leads to rooms used for audiences which are now decorated with beautifully woven silk damask and brocatelle. A quiet loggia overlooks the royal park with a view of Wren's Observatory building with its unusual red time ball that marks Greenwich time at 1 o'clock daily. The 3-site ticket includes admission to The Old Royal Observatory and the adjacent National Maritime Museum which is filled with stories of Britain's great naval heroes and explorers, impressive oil paintings and many fascinating exhibits. A fine exhibition celebrates the life of Nelson. A visit to all three buildings will occupy a full day or a visit can be combined with a river cruise on the Thames. The park, the oldest of the royal parks, is ideal for picnics and includes outstanding landscaping by Le Notre, flower gardens, deer park and children's playground
