One of the best historic houses in the country
Stratfield Saye House was presented to the Great Duke of Wellington by a grateful nation after the battle of Waterloo in 1815, and is still the home of the present Duke and Duchess. The house retains, with many of his personal belongings, much of the atmosphere created by the Great Duke. The Wellington Exhibition houses his magnificent 18 ton funeral carriage, and within the grounds are the American Gardens and the grave of Copenhagen, the Great Duke's favourite charger. Historic Houses Association Member. Opening times: May: Sat, Sun & BH Mon, Jun, Jul & Aug: daily except Fris. Sept: Sat & Sun and during the week by arrangement for groups. Grounds & exhibition: 11.30am - 6pm. House: 12 noon - 4pm. Last admission 4pm
