Famous historic house in the downland village of Bramber. Built in 1470 by William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester, founder of Magdalen College, Oxford. Classified (Grade I) as "the best example of late 15th century timber-framing in Sussex." Fine panelled rooms, including the unique trompe l'oeil 'Painted Room', decorated for the visit of Elizabeth I. The 'Kings Room' has connections with Charles II's escape to France in 1651. Rare 17th century painted wall leather. English furniture, ceramics, manuscripts and fine English costume-doll collection. The Library houses an important private collection of works by Victorian poet and artist Thomas Hood. Still a lived-in family home, St Mary's was awarded a 'Warmest Welcome' Commendation by the SE Tourist Board. gardens Charming gardens with amusing topiary as seen on television.
