a favourite retreat for the Royal Family and is one of the major attractions for visitors
The area to the west of Aberdeen is known as Deeside. It could be said that Queen Victoria was the first to spread the word about the beautiful scenic splendour of this part of the Grampian Highlands - she called it her "dear paradise". Balmoral Castle which dates from the mid 1800's was a favourite retreat for the Royal Family and is one of the major attractions for visitors. Part of the castle is open to the public from May to June every year. Nearby Royal Lochnagar Distillery also welcomes visitors to come and sample some of the "water of life". The Victorian Heritage Trail highlights many of the attractions on Royal Deeside including areas of outstanding natural beauty.
