One of the Roman's Saxon Shore forts
The massive outer walls and gatehouse of one of the Roman's Saxon Shore forts, within which William the Conqueror built an oval-shaped castle, now ruined. Parts of the gatehouse, keep, dungeon and chapel remain, and medieval catapult balls, Elizabethan cannon and World War II gun emplacements can be seen. Open all year. "English Heritage"     |
