One of the great timber houses of England
One of the great timber houses of England, built of oak trees felled from the surrounding forest twenty years before Columbus discovered America. Special architectural details include the jettying, dragon beams, king post and tie beam, corner posts of upturned oaks, and an amazing wealth of timbering only to be seen in a house built before the modern iron industry destroyed England's forests. 13th century prison. Associated with Henry VIII as a hunting lodge. Ghosts (now and then). Opening Times: By prior arrangement only. Groups 20-55 people
