A stunning 15th century Moated Hall

A stunning 15th century Moated Hall (Grade I), set in gardens and grounds of 10 acres, frequently described as "one of England's loveliest houses". Rich in history and architectural detail. Features of particular note are richly carved beams, superb linenfold, c1559 wall paintings, herringbone brickwork and vine-leaf pargetting. From around 1401 Otley Hall was the home of the Gosnold family for some 300 years. Bartholomew Gosnold voyaged to the New World in 1602 and named Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. He returned in 1607 to found the Jamestown settlement, the first English-speaking settlement in the US, 13 years before the Mayflower landed. The account of the 1602 voyage is thought to have provided the geography for Shakespeare's Tempest. The Gardens are formal and informal, with canal, mount, nutteries, rose garden, woodland, and historically accurate Tudor features including a knot and herb garden, designed by Sylvia Landsberg (author of The Medieval Garden). Historic Houses Association Member. Opening Times: Every BH Sun & Mon, 12.30 - 6pm. Gardens: Mons only from 12 Apr - 20 Sept, 2 - 5pm
